The story of 7 Fathoms begins with Terrence and Courtney Howell, who met in 2004 while teaching in South Korea and bonded over a shared love of exploration, food, and culture.
After time in Courtney’s home state of Louisiana, they set down roots in Grates Cove, Newfoundland—Terrence’s ancestral home. Their first venture, Grates Cove Co., blended their passions for food, art, and hospitality. But the beginning of 7 Fathoms came quietly—during a walk on the beach.
Terrence, who lives with Crohn’s disease and wears a medical appliance, noticed something unexpected: after handling seaweed, the contact dermatitis on his hands and around the site of his appliance improved. That moment sparked a deep dive into the potential of local seaweed for skin care.
Curious and committed, Courtney and Terrence developed their first seaweed extract using local Laminaria digitata. When it helped Terrence’s skin, they knew they had something worth sharing.
Today, 7 Fathoms remains a family-run business shaped by the sea. Their daughter, Phoenix, often joins them in harvesting seaweed along the coast—and is a key part of the business, learning and contributing to every aspect as the company grows.
Courtney, raised in a fishing village in Louisiana, sees their Newfoundland life as a “parallel universe”—equally seasonal, sea-bound, and full of purpose. For them, skincare is more than surface deep—it’s about place, resilience, and the care we carry forward.
