From the edge of the Atlantic to your skin—discover how seaweed’s bioactive compounds help repair and protect the skin barrier under real-world stress.

A Midlife Reflection on Skin, Shifts, and Seaweed. We didn’t start working with seaweed because we thought it might become a business. We started because nothing else was working.
Terrence had painful contact dermatitis from his ostomy flange, and we were desperate for relief. So we turned to the sea right outside our door — and everything changed.
Over time, our seaweed formulations began showing up in other people’s lives, too — offering calm after surgery, support during postpartum recovery, and comfort for reactive skin.
And somewhere in the care we gave to others, I forgot I was still part of the story.
I think a lot of us do — especially women. You manage the house, the work, the family, the finances. You figure out what’s for supper while you’re answering emails. You hold space for everyone. And somehow, you start believing that if you just try a little harder, you’ll manage to hold it all in place.
Until one day, something shifts.
For me, it started a couple of years ago. My mom passed away. Terrence had a major surgery. I was beginning to feel changes in my energy, my emotions — even my skin. I realized I couldn’t keep bracing myself anymore. I was exhausted from trying to keep it all together.
And somewhere in that mess, I was ready to let go.
Letting go wasn’t dramatic. It was quiet.
It came with small choices — to stop rushing, to stop fixing, to stop pretending I wasn’t changing.
I started leaning into rituals that helped me feel grounded again. Walking the cliffs around Grates Cove. Drinking tea in silence. And yes — slipping into the bath with seaweed we had harvested ourselves.
Soaking in a seaweed bath wasn’t about fixing anything. It was a therapeutic pause — part of a long tradition known as Thalassotherapy, where the ocean’s minerals, sea plants like seaweed, and salts are used to restore the body.
For me, it became a way to notice what needed care. A soft return.
One of the first physical signs of midlife for me was how my skin started changing.
I think for me, my skin really started changing last summer - but especially over the past year. I've noticed a shift in skin quality, and honestly, it feels like even the shape of my face has changed. It's the kind of thing you hear a lot of women talking about now - the texture, the sensitivity, even unexpected aches.
That’s when I started learning more about perimenopause and how hormone changes affect the skin:
Knowing this helped me feel less frustrated. This wasn’t something I needed to “fix.” It was my body moving into a new chapter — and asking for different care.
At 7 Fathoms, we don’t make claims about reversing time. That’s not what our skincare is about.
We make seaweed-based products designed for the skin that’s been through something — whether it’s postpartum, post-surgery, or the ongoing shifts of perimenopause. Times when your skin suddenly needs something different: less harshness, more calm, and ingredients that work in harmony with your body’s natural rhythms.
Our extracts are made in-house from cold North Atlantic seaweed, harvested sustainably from the wild, rugged coastlines of Newfoundland — where the waters are turbulent, the climate is harsh, and the seaweed grows strong.
That stress builds strength. Inside the plant and for your skin.
Our formulations are unscented, simple, and made for ultra-sensitive skin — because that’s what I needed, too.
If you’ve been feeling like your skin has changed…
If your nervous system feels more delicate, more tired…
If you’re navigating that invisible middle space between who you’ve been and who you’re becoming…
Then you’re not alone.
There is beauty in this season. There is resilience. And there are ways — quiet, slow, intentional ways — to reconnect with your body.
That’s what this work is about.

A Skin Health Perspective from Dr. Eddi Kenny, ND, Wellness Advisor to 7 Fathoms
As a naturopathic doctor, I’m often asked how skin changes during different stages of motherhood — from pregnancy to postpartum, perimenopause, and beyond. These hormonal transitions affect more than just mood and metabolism — they also change the way your skin looks and feels.
When you're a mother, taking time for your own skin can sometimes feel like a luxury. But it’s not — it’s care. And your skin deserves it.
Here are three of the most common skin concerns I hear from women — and therapeutic insights to help you support your skin barrier with confidence and intention.
You’re not alone — those tiny, rough patches on your upper arms, thighs, or back are often caused by a common condition called keratosis pilaris. It happens when keratin (a natural protein in your skin) builds up and blocks the hair follicles, leading to small, sometimes red or dry bumps.
It’s more common in women and often flares during hormonal shifts like postpartum or perimenopause. While it’s harmless, it can be frustrating — especially when your skin doesn’t feel like your own anymore.
The good news? You don’t need harsh scrubs or peels. Hydrating the skin barrier and calming inflammation with naturally rich bioactives — such as those found in seaweed — can visibly smooth and soften these areas over time.
What goes on your skin goes into your body. My patients want skincare that’s not just gentle — it has to be effective, therapeutic, and safe.
This isn’t just about softening bumps. It’s about reclaiming comfort in your skin — without compromise.
Dry, tight, or itchy skin often signals that the skin barrier isn’t holding onto moisture the way it should. For many women, this shows up during postpartum or perimenopause, when estrogen levels dip — reducing hydration, elasticity, and resilience.
Add in dry weather, hot showers, or daily stress, and your skin can feel parched, no matter how much you moisturize.
What I recommend:
In my practice, I often recommend 7 Fathoms products because they meet these criteria — offering hydration, inflammation support, and skin barrier protection in a way that’s both gentle and effective.
7 Fathoms supports the food, lifestyle, and stress recommendations I make. Almost everyone needs some help for their skin, and this fits seamlessly into what I offer.
Supporting the skin is part of supporting the whole person — especially during times of change.
Scars — whether from surgery, acne, stretch marks, or childbirth — are a natural part of the healing process. But redness, tightness, or rough texture can linger, making skin feel unfamiliar or uncomfortable.
This is often due to lingering inflammation and how collagen is laid down during repair. Over time, this can be gently supported.
What helps?
Seaweed is a real powerhouse packed with bioactive compounds that can help reduce inflammation — or the ‘itis’s.’ When inflammation decreases, often pain and redness decreases. Seaweed is a superhero in disguise.
This isn’t about erasing scars. It’s about supporting your skin in how it repairs and renews — and feeling more at ease in that process.
Whether you're navigating bumps, dryness, or healing, your skin reflects everything you carry — and everything you’ve given.
The seaweed-based skincare offered by 7 Fathoms is one of the tools I trust to support the skin barrier — because it combines hydration, inflammation support, and bioactivity in a formula that respects the skin's natural rhythms.
Taking care of your skin isn’t just about how you look — it’s a quiet way to honour your own needs. And that care has a ripple effect.
Because when you care for your skin with presence and intention, you’re also caring for the person you’re becoming — resilient, renewed, and rooted in strength.
When You’re Ready to Support Your Skin, We’re Here.
Find products that honour your skin’s needs — and your own.

FAQs
🔹 Is seaweed good for sensitive skin?

🔹 Why is Newfoundland seaweed better for skincare?
✔ Cold-water seaweed is richer in fucoidan and antioxidants than warm-water alternatives, making it more potent for skin barrier repair.
🔹 How does seaweed compare to aloe for skincare?
✔ While aloe is great for burns, seaweed provides hydration, skin barrier repair, and protection from environmental stressors, making it a daily essential.

Our holiday trip a few years back wasn’t quite like Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987 holiday comedy - John Candy and Steve Martin), but it was definitely memorable! That’s a story for another day. 😊 Living on an island means travel planning gets interesting—deciding whether to fly or take a drive-ferry-drive combo, and figuring out if winter jackets & boots are essential or can be left behind. While we can’t control the weather or schedules, there’s one thing we can control: keeping our skin barrier strong for holiday travel.
