Grates Cove, Newfoundland and Labrador — October 2, 2025  – CBC’s Dragons’ Den will spotlight local entrepreneurs Courtney and Terrence Howell of 7 Fathoms Seaweed Skincare, on October 16 at 8 p.m. (8:30 p.m. NT) as they share how their family's need for relief from a chronic skincare condition led to discovering the power of seaweed and creating 7 Fathoms, a seaweed-based brand serving Canadians coast to coast.

The story of 7 Fathoms began in 2016 after a fierce northeasterly storm scattered the shores of Grates Cove with seaweed. Among the drift was Laminaria digitata, a brown seaweed with a gel-like texture. Terrence picked up a piece and asked, “What would this do if applied to the skin?” That question changed everything. Terrence had long struggled with severe contact dermatitis, and within days of applying the seaweed directly, his skin began to heal. The results were undeniable — and they set the Howells on a new path.

Driven by this discovery, Courtney and Terrence spent two years studying seaweed’s bioactive compounds and working with scientific mentors including Dr. Robert Helleur, former Professor of Environmental and Analytical Chemistry at Memorial University. By 2020, they launched 7 Fathoms, creating gentle, effective skincare powered by seaweed’s natural bioactives, including fucoidan (soothing and anti-inflammatory), beta-glucans (hydrating and barrier-restoring), and polyphenols (antioxidant protection).

Since then, the products have found their way into the hands of caregivers, dermatology patients, and families seeking natural, science-backed support for sensitive skin. From people living with eczema and dermatitis to nurses with over-washed hands, customers consistently share stories of relief, resilience, and renewed confidence. “With 7 Fathoms, our goal has always been to create skincare that brings comfort and real results for people living with sensitive skin conditions — while staying embedded in our community and focused on sustainability” says founder Courtney Howell.
