Co-Founder of Indie Beauty Brand Earns Nomination for Philanthropy in Rural NL

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: GRATES COVE, NL  September 21 2026

7 Fathoms Seaweed Skincare is proud to announce that co-founder Courtney Howell has been nominated for the Cosmetics Alliance Canada Community Spirit Award, presented in partnership with Look Good Feel Better (LGFB) recognizing her commitment to community leadership, service, and giving back. Her inclusion marks a unique shift for the category, as an independent skincare brand from rural Newfoundland and Labrador is nominated alongside multi-billion dollar retailers for their individual and corporate philanthropy. 7 Fathoms Skincare will also exhibit alongside LGFB at this fall’s Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO) conference in Montreal, an organization that supports cancer care professionals across Canada.

Courtney co-founded 7 Fathoms with her husband, Terrence Howell, in Grates Cove, Newfoundland and Labrador, where they have built a rural ocean-based skincare company founded on using sustainably-harvested wild North Atlantic seaweed in skincare products. Throughout the years, they’ve remained committed to both scientific research and rural community development in their professional endeavours.

That commitment to community came to the forefront during the 2025 wildfires along the Baccalieu Trail. As communities faced evacuations, property loss and major disruption, Courtney and Terrence opened the shared spaces of 7 Fathoms and Grates Cove Co. to support the emergency response.

Working alongside neighbours, volunteers, donors and local organizations, they helped prepare and deliver hot meals to firefighters and first responders, supported fundraising efforts and assisted with the distribution of school supply kits for displaced children.

“If our building, our voice, our hands — anything we have — can help, we’re here,” Courtney said during the response.

Courtney’s commitment to the community extends beyond emergency response. Through 7 Fathoms, she has also supported scientific education and mentorship, including the establishment of the Dr. Robert J. Helleur Graduate Scholarship in Environmental Science at Memorial University.

The nomination reflects a core philosophy that has shaped the company from the beginning:  that building a business in rural Newfoundland and Labrador means helping its people and its community thrive.

7 Fathoms is honoured to see Courtney’s work recognized by Cosmetics Alliance Canada and grateful to the many community members, volunteers, customers and partners who continue to be part of the company’s story.
